Brescia, Italy, July 16, 2024 — In a significant leap forward for sustainable energy, Turboden S.p.A., a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group Company, proudly announced the successful operational launch of a groundbreaking 28.9 MWe geothermal power plant at the Energy Development Corporation’s (EDC) Palayan Bayan expansion project. This innovative plant, nestled within the Bacon-Manito geothermal facility on Luzon Island, is poised to reshape the landscape of renewable energy in the Philippines.

The Palayan binary power plant marks a notable expansion of the existing 140-MW Bacon-Manito (BacMan) facility. Using cutting-edge Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology, Turboden has harnessed waste heat from the 120-MW Palayan Bayan 1 flash geothermal power plant to generate electricity, eliminating the need for additional steam supply. This state-of-the-art process not only maximizes energy efficiency but also significantly reduces environmental impact.

Operational since January, the ORC plant is synchronized with the Luzon grid, showcasing an impressive gross annual generation capacity of 253,000 MWh and a net annual generation of 219,800 MWh. This sustainable powerhouse is set to cut the country’s carbon emissions by an estimated 72,200 tons annually — equivalent to the CO2 absorption capacity of a forest 4.7 times the size of Manila.

“The Philippines, with its unique volcanic geography, is the world's third-largest geothermal energy producer,” said Andrea La Gioia, General Manager of Turboden. “Our partnership with EDC in this landmark project underscores our commitment to innovative renewable energy solutions. The new binary Geothermal Power Unit not only boosts the power output of the existing Flash Plant but also sets a replicable precedent for high-enthalpy geothermal projects worldwide.”

Construction of the Palayan binary power plant commenced in mid-2021, with Turboden selected for its expertise in ORC technology. The plant’s success has garnered international acclaim, including recognition from Japan’s Ministry of the Environment as a FY2020 "Bilateral Credit Mechanism (JCM) Funding Support Project," highlighting its role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting global sustainability.

Polands Geothermal Wells hits 5km depth Eyeing a 7Km Threshold

Geothermal Milestone Reached: Banska PGP-4 Well in Szaflary, Poland Hits 5-Kilometer Depth By : Robert Buluma In a significant development for geothermal energy enthusiasts, drilling operations at the Banska PGP-4 well in Szaflary, Poland have reached a depth of 5 kilometers, marking a major milestone in the project's progress towards its 7-kilometer target. Since its inception, the ambitious geothermal drilling project in Szaflary has been making steady strides. As of the end of 2023, the well has successfully reached a depth of 5000 meters, uncovering promising results along the way. Notably, the well has tapped into a sizable reservoir boasting temperatures of 120 °C. The drilling will persist until it reaches the targeted depth of 7000 meters, where another aquifer is anticipated. The entire drilling endeavor is slated for completion within the first quarter of 2024. Initiated in 2019, the plans to drill a 7-kilometer geothermal well in Podhale, Szaflary aimed at gathering cruc
