The leaders of South Korea and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to strengthen their partnership and collaborate more closely in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. During a meeting between Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nayhan, several memorandums of understanding were signed to deepen and accelerate cooperation in this area. The two leaders also agreed to strengthen cooperation in other areas, such as conventional and clean energy, economy and investment, and defense and defense technology, as well as emerging industries and culture.

The joint statement released by the two countries recognized the importance of nuclear power as a source of energy security and a crucial element in the transition to a clean economy. The leaders expressed their determination to deepen and accelerate collaboration in the peaceful nuclear energy sector, not only by completing the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant project but also by pursuing additional nuclear projects in the UAE and third countries.

The agreements signed included a Net-Zero Acceleration Strategic Cooperation memorandum of understanding between Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation. This MoU will form a consultative body and expand practical cooperation in the field of developing export markets for nuclear power plants in third countries and joint procurement of business finance. The two companies also plan to cooperate closely in future technology development and R&D joint research, such as small modular reactors and micro-reactors.

Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission also signed an administrative agreement with the UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation. This agreement will simplify the nuclear export permit procedure between the two countries and allow the NSSC and FANR to directly handle nuclear export permits.

Overall, the agreements signed during this state visit marked a significant step forward in achieving carbon neutrality and securing energy security through nuclear power and future technologies. Both countries look forward to continuing to strengthen their cooperation in the years to come
