Ormat's Crescent Valley Geothermal Development Project Secures Green Light in Nevada

🌋 Powering the Future: Ormat's Crescent Valley Geothermal Development Project Secures Green Light in Nevada 🌱⚡

By Robert Buluma

In a major stride for clean energy advancement, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has completed its environmental assessment and officially approved the Crescent Valley Geothermal Development Project spearheaded by Ormat  Nevada, Inc. This landmark decision—reached on July 16, 2025—unlocks the potential to generate 30 megawatts of geothermal power from the heart of Crescent Valley, situated between Eureka and Lander Counties in Nevada.

🔍 Project Snapshot

  • Project Name: Crescent Valley Geothermal Development Project
  • Developer: Ormat Nevada, Inc.
  • Facility Size: ~30 MW (net rated) geothermal power plant
  • Project Footprint: ~2,066 acres on public and private lands
  • Location: Crescent Valley, Battle Mountain, NV (Zip: 89821 & 89820)
  • NEPA Status: Completed Environmental Assessment (DOI-BLM-NV-E020-2025-0010-EA)
  • Lead Agency: BLM Tuscarora Field Office
  • Cooperating Agencies:
    • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service – Migratory Bird Program
    • Nevada Department of Wildlife
    • Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
    • Eureka County Board of Commissioners

♻️ A Renewable Powerhouse in the Making

The Crescent Valley project is not just a win for Ormat—it’s a victory for sustainable energy development in Nevada. Once operational, the facility will tap into underground geothermal reservoirs to deliver around 30 megawatts of clean, baseload energy, enough to power thousands of homes and businesses while helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Ormat’s  proposal includes the construction of a transmission line that will integrate this power directly into the regional grid, ensuring reliable and renewable energy delivery to Nevada’s growing energy market.

📅 From Start to FONSI

The environmental assessment process began on April 25, 2025, and concluded with the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) issued on July 16, 2025, clearing the way for development to begin. The BLM's thorough review, in collaboration with wildlife and conservation agencies, ensures the project balances energy production with environmental stewardship.
