Green Therma and Stadtwerke Wismar Sign Letter of Intent to Advance Geothermal District Heating Study in Germany

Green Therma and Stadtwerke Wismar Sign Letter of Intent to Explore Geothermal District Heating in Germany Wismar, Germany – May 12, 2026 — A new step toward decarbonizing urban heating systems has been set in motion after Green Therma ApS and Stadtwerke Wismar GmbH signed a Letter of Intent to jointly assess the potential for deploying geothermal district heating in Wismar, Germany. The agreement marks an early but strategic move toward integrating advanced closed-loop geothermal technology into one of northern Germany’s established district heating networks, as cities across Europe accelerate efforts to phase out fossil-fuel-based heating systems. Early-Stage Collaboration Targets Clean Heat Transition Under the agreement, both organizations will work together to evaluate whether geothermal energy can be integrated into Wismar’s existing district heating infrastructure. The partnership will begin with a structured pre-feasibility study covering geological screening, technical e...

Iceland’s Orkuveitan Leads the Charge in Superhot Geothermal Development

In a bold step toward redefining the future of clean energy, Orkuveitan, Iceland’s leading utility company, has announced its next major geothermal milestone — the IDDP-3 superhot drilling project. By: Robert Buluma Presented by Hera Grímsdóttir, Executive Director of Research and Innovation at Orkuveitan, during the Superhot Summit in Reykjavík’s Harpa Conference Center, this initiative marks the dawn of a new era in geothermal energy utilization. The event, organized by Iceland’s Minister of Environment, Energy, and Climate Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson in collaboration with the national energy sector, showcased Iceland’s ambition to fast-track the development of next-generation geothermal systems. A joint declaration of intent was signed between the Ministry and three major energy companies — Landsvirkjun, Orkuveitan, and HS Orka — solidifying their cooperation on the Iceland Deep Drilling Project (IDDP-3). The Next Frontier: Deep Drilling into the Earth’s Core In her keynote, Hera Grímsdó...

Utah and New Zealand Join Forces to Supercharge Geothermal Energy Innovation under “Operation Gigawatt”

A New Chapter in Geothermal Diplomacy: Utah & New Zealand Seal Geothermal Pact By:  Robert Buluma In October 2025, a significant milestone was achieved when Spencer Cox, Governor of Utah, and Simon Watts, New Zealand’s Minister for Energy, signed a Letter of Intent in Auckland. The agreement formalises cooperation between Utah and New Zealand, with a special focus on developing geothermal energy as part of their shared goal to expand and diversify clean energy generation. Key Elements of the Agreement The newly signed agreement aims to strengthen collaboration in energy generation, diversification, and innovation — with geothermal energy taking center stage. The partnership also aligns with Utah’s broader mission, Operation Gigawatt , which seeks to create energy abundance through the development of renewable and advanced energy technologies. This signing was part of a wider trade and innovation mission involving cooperation in sectors such as critical minerals, clean energy, ...

Halliburton Partners with GeoFrame Energy to Launch the U.S.’s First Geothermal-Powered Lithium Extraction Project in East Texas

Halliburton  Awarded Lithium Well Project by  GeoFrame Energy   A Major Step Toward Sustainable Lithium and Geothermal Integration By:  Robert Buluma In a groundbreaking development for the U.S. energy sector,  Halliburton (NYSE: HAL) has been awarded a major contract by GeoFrame Energy for a geothermal and Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) project set to take shape in the Smackover Formation of East Texas. This partnership marks a pivotal moment for both the lithium and geothermal industries, combining innovation, sustainability, and proven engineering expertise. According to the announcement, Halliburton will plan and design the first demonstration phase wells, with work expected to commence in late 2025. The collaboration aims to accelerate the development of America’s domestic lithium production capacity  a critical step as global demand for lithium continues to surge due to the rapid growth of electric vehicles and energy storage systems.  “G...

Košice Ignites Its Geothermal Future: A 30-Year Dream Becomes Reality”

Košice Turns Up the Heat: Geothermal Energy to Warm the City After 30 Years in Waiting By: Robert Buluma After three decades of anticipation, the city of Košice, Slovakia, is finally set to tap into one of the Earth’s cleanest and most sustainable energy sources geothermal heat. On Wednesday, drilling begins on the long-awaited project “Utilization of Geothermal Energy in the Košice Basin”, marking a major leap toward energy independence and carbon neutrality for Slovakia’s eastern metropolis. From the site of Svinica–Ďurkov, a new deep geothermal well will be drilled, expected to reach a temperature of 135°C and a flow rate of 55 liters per second. Two reinjection wells each plunging roughly 3,700 meters deep  will accompany the main production well, ensuring a closed-loop system that reuses and reheats the geothermal water beneath the Earth’s surface. The third and final well is expected to be completed by mid-2026. Turning Vision into Reality The geothermal heating project is be...
