Rodatherm Energy: The Refrigerant Gambit

By: Robert Buluma   Rodatherm Energy has done something no other geothermal startup has attempted at commercial scale: swapped water for refrigerant in a closed-loop system. The claim is 50% higher thermal efficiency than water-based binary cycles, achieved by circulating a proprietary phase-change fluid through a fully cased, pressurized wellbore. The company emerged from stealth in September 2025 with a $38 million Series A—the largest first venture raise in geothermal history. Lead investor Evok Innovations was joined by Toyota Ventures, TDK Ventures, and the Grantham Foundation. The engineering thesis is elegant. The execution risks are significant. This is an Alphaxioms examination of both. II. The Thermodynamic Distinction Every geothermal company you've covered moves heat using water or steam. Rodatherm moves heat using a fluid that boils and condenses inside the wellbore. In a conventional closed-loop water system (Eavor's model), water circulates as a single-phase liq...

Green Therma Advances Denmark Geothermal District Heating Through Seismic Surveys

Green Therma’s Seismic Milestone Signals New Momentum for Denmark’s Geothermal Future By; Robert Buluma   Image: Green Therma Advances Denmark Geothermal District Heating Through Seismic Surveys The race to decarbonize Europe’s heating sector is intensifying, and Denmark is quietly positioning itself at the forefront of one of the most promising transitions in modern energy systems geothermal district heating. In a significant development that could reshape Aalborg’s renewable heating ambitions, Green Therma has announced the successful completion of seismic surveys around Storvorde, marking a major milestone in the company’s Heat4Ever™ geothermal demonstration project. The announcement may appear procedural at first glance, but beneath the surface literally and figuratively lies a much bigger story. Seismic campaigns are among the most critical phases in geothermal development. They provide the geological intelligence required to determine whether underground reservoirs possess ...

Colorado’s $12.4M Geothermal Push Signals a Structural Shift in Clean Energy Strategy

Colorado’s $12.4M Geothermal Investment Signals a Structural Shift in Clean Energy Strategy By:  Robert Buluma Colorado’s latest announcement of $12.4 million in geothermal funding is more than a routine clean energy allocation—it is a clear indicator that geothermal development in the United States is transitioning from experimental pilot projects into structured, institutional deployment and early-stage grid integration planning. The funding, distributed across seven projects, spans two major categories: building-focused geothermal heating and cooling systems, and early-stage geothermal electricity generation exploration. While the headline figure is modest compared to solar or wind investment volumes, the strategic signal embedded in how the money is distributed is far more important than the total dollar amount. Colorado is not simply funding renewable energy. It is actively testing whether geothermal energy can evolve into a dual-purpose infrastructure layer—serving both th...

Tanzania’s Ngozi Geothermal Tender Signals a Major New Drilling Push in East Africa

Tanzania’s Ngozi Geothermal Project Opens Major International Tender for Drilling Rig, Cementing and Mud Engineering Services By: Robert Buluma   Tanzania’s geothermal ambitions are entering a decisive new phase after the Tanzania Geothermal Development Company (TGDC) officially invited international and local firms to participate in a major tender linked to the Ngozi Geothermal Project in the Mbeya Region. The announcement, published through TGDC’s official channels, signals a significant acceleration in Tanzania’s quest to unlock its enormous geothermal potential and diversify its national energy mix. The tender, identified as Tender No. 70/2025/2026/NC/72 , seeks service providers for the hiring of a drilling rig with accessories, cementing unit and accessories, and mud engineering services for the drilling of three slim wells at the Ngozi geothermal prospect. The project will be procured through an International Competitive Tendering framework, highlighting the scale and strat...

Exergy’s Geothermal Expansion: How High-Tech ORC Systems Are Driving a Revenue Boom

Exergy’s Revenue Boom: How High-Tech Geothermal Engineering Is Driving a New Industrial Growth Wave By: Robert Buluma   In the global renewable energy sector, few stories illustrate the speed of industrial transformation as clearly as that of Exergy, an Italian-origin engineering company specializing in geothermal and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power systems. In just five years, the company has moved from modest revenues of around €8 million to projections approaching €80 million, marking one of the most rapid growth trajectories in the geothermal equipment manufacturing space. This expansion is not accidental or purely cyclical. It reflects a broader structural shift in global energy demand, where industrial decarbonization, deep geothermal exploration, and heat recovery systems are becoming central pillars of the energy transition. Exergy has positioned itself at the intersection of these trends, leveraging advanced turbine design, international expansion, and a strong intelle...
