Meta and XGS Energy Partner on 150 MW Geothermal Power Project in New Mexico A Game-Changer for AI, Clean Energy, and the Future
By Robert Buluma – Alphaxioms Energy Blog
In a bold move that signals the future of energy and technology convergence, XGS Energy and Meta Platforms, Inc. have announced a groundbreaking agreement to develop 150 megawatts (MW) of next-generation geothermal energy in New Mexico. This partnership not only promises to reshape the state's energy landscape but also underscores the growing demand for sustainable, round-the-clock power to fuel the age of artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven economies.
Clean Power Without Water – XGS’s Unique Edge
At the heart of this partnership lies XGS Energy’s proprietary solid-state geothermal technology. Unlike traditional geothermal systems that rely heavily on water and specific geological conditions, XGS’s innovation enables electricity production from hot, dry rock with zero operating water use. This water-independent, location-flexible system allows clean baseload power to be harnessed from regions previously deemed unsuitable for geothermal energy development.
The project will be connected to the PNM electric grid and primarily support Meta’s data center operations in New Mexico. With this single venture, XGS Energy is expected to increase the state’s geothermal electricity output tenfold a monumental leap for a region that currently hosts only one operating geothermal plant.
“We’re pleased to support Meta’s ambitious AI objectives and accelerate access to new round-the-clock power supplies,” said Josh Prueher, CEO of XGS Energy.
Meta’s AI Ambitions Meet Renewable Innovation
As one of the world’s leading buyers of clean energy, Meta’s decision to partner with XGS comes at a critical moment. AI infrastructure development requires vast, uninterrupted power supplies. By investing in geothermal — a truly 24/7 renewable energy source — Meta is diversifying its energy portfolio while maintaining its leadership in sustainability.
“With next-generation geothermal technologies like XGS ready for scale, geothermal can be a major player in supporting the advancement of technologies like AI,” said Urvi Parekh, Meta’s Global Head of Energy.
A New Geothermal Frontier in New Mexico
New Mexico is well-positioned for a geothermal revolution. According to a new report by Project InnerSpace, New Mexico Tech, and the NM Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, the state has over 160 gigawatts of untapped geothermal potential. XGS’s technology offers the ability to tap into this “hot rock goldmine” despite the state’s arid conditions.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham praised the initiative:
“XGS Energy and Meta’s 150 MW project will create good-paying jobs, strengthen our grid with reliable baseload power, and position our state as a national leader in next-generation renewable energy.”
Two-Phased Execution to 2030
The project will be executed in two phases, both scheduled to be fully operational by 2030. It represents a powerful blend of corporate responsibility, state-level vision, and technological innovation.
Don Tarry, CEO of PNM, emphasized the significance:
“This project is a meaningful step toward meeting New Mexico’s clean energy goals and demonstrates the power of advanced technology to shape our energy future.”
Final Thoughts: Redefining the Geothermal Playbook
The XGS-Meta partnership exemplifies what the future of geothermal energy could look like — fast, flexible, and free from traditional limitations. With major players backing innovation and a state poised to lead, New Mexico might just become the Silicon Valley of geothermal energy.
