Exergy and Rentco Set To Revitilize Kenyas Geothermal With Additional 67 MWe

Exergy  and Rentco Ignite a Geothermal Revolution in Olkaria: A New Era for Clean Energy in Africa

By:Robert Buluma

In a groundbreaking move set to redefine Kenya's geothermal landscape, Exergy and Rentco have inked a cooperation agreement to turbocharge the Olkaria Geothermal Field with an additional 67 MWe capacity. This ambitious project promises not just incremental gains, but a seismic shift in the region's energy dynamics, signaling a bold new chapter in Africa's clean energy saga.

Exergy , renowned for its cutting-edge technology and robust portfolio boasting 500 MW capacity, will supply 8 Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power plants, contributing approximately 30 MWe to the project. These ORC plants are part of Rentco's geothermal wellhead projects in Olkaria, designed to harness both flash and ORC systems, optimizing energy extraction from geothermal resources.

The strategic deployment of Exergy’s highly efficient Radial Outflow Turbine (ROT) technology will be a game-changer, enhancing the performance and reliability of geothermal binary plants. Luca Pozzoni, General Manager of Exergy International, emphasized their commitment to facilitating a seamless clean energy transition in Africa. “Our goal is to improve electrical access for an ever-growing number of people across Africa, contributing significantly to the continent's sustainable energy future,” Pozzoni stated.

Adding to the momentum, Erdogan Arpasi, General Manager of Exergy Turkey and the driving force behind African market development, expressed elation over the partnership, hinting at even more groundbreaking ventures on the horizon. “This agreement is just the beginning. There is so much more to come,” Arpasi declared, leaving the industry on edge, eager for what's next.

As of late 2023, Kenya proudly ranks among the top ten countries globally in geothermal capacity, boasting an impressive 985 MWe of installed capacity. With this latest project, Kenya is poised to surpass the monumental 1 GWe milestone in 2024, cementing its position as a global leader in geothermal energy.

The implications of this partnership are profound, not just for Kenya but for the entire continent. It represents a significant leap towards energy independence, economic growth, and environmental stewardship. The additional capacity will power homes, industries, and communities, fostering development and enhancing the quality of life for countless individuals.

In a world grappling with climate change and energy crises, the Exergy-Rentco collaboration offers a beacon of hope, a testament to what innovative technology and strategic partnerships can achieve. As the Olkaria project unfolds, all eyes will be on Kenya, watching as it leads the charge towards a sustainable, electrified future.

5th of June, we reported that Exergy had already supplied United Downs, GEL Company With an ORC , First of Its kind

This is not just an energy project; it is a harbinger of change, a nerve-shredding journey into a future where clean energy reigns supreme. The stakes are high, the potential vast, and the excitement palpable. The energy revolution is here, and it's electrifying.

Driving the UK Toward Net Zero: Chris Sladen on Geothermal’s Untapped Potential

Alphaxioms, we talked to Chris Sladen about his involvement in geothermal both in the UK, and globally By:  Robert Buluma Chris, please begin by explaining a little about yourself, and why you have a passion for geothermal? I have spent over 45 years involved in energy. Following undergraduate studies in geology at Southampton University, and a PhD in sedimentology at Reading University, I joined the energy sector in Aberdeen in 1980. It was a fascinating era when it seemed like at least one giant oil & gas field was discovered offshore every month; the wealth creation for the UK was gigantic. I got to see so much geology and rocks - my true passion. I moved to China in late 1983; not today’s China, this was over 40 years ago, a country closed for decades and embarking on an open-door policy, in part to bring both investment and technology. I became very interested in energy trends, energy politics, and new geography created by changing politics leading to opportunities for ene...

Mastering the Subsurface: Insights from a Geothermal Reservoir Engineer

Geothermal energy is often called the “quiet backbone” of the clean energy transition. To understand the science, challenges, and innovations driving this sector, we spoke with a seasoned geothermal reservoir engineer with experience spanning the Andes, Nevada, Utah, and volcanic fields worldwide. Here’s what they shared. By:  Robert Buluma 1. What sparked your passion for geothermal reservoir engineering, and did you ever imagine yourself working in some of the world’s most challenging geothermal fields? My passion was sparked during my early career in the petroleum industry, specifically in reservoirs. I was fascinated by the subsurface—how fluids move, how heat and pressure interact but it wasn’t until I worked on projects in Peru that I realized geothermal offered the chance to apply my skills to clean energy. I never imagined I would later work on Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) projects in Nevada and Utah or Andean volcanic fields, where the geology is as unforgiving as it ...
