Tender: Reykjavik Energy To Drill 35 Geothermal Wells While Also Tapping Water

Orkuveitan’s Ambitious Geothermal Drilling Project: Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future

By : Robert Buluma

In a landmark move toward bolstering Iceland’s energy security and sustainability, Orkuveitan, the Reykjavik-based energy company, has launched a significant tender process for its latest geothermal drilling initiative. This project, which aims to drill 35 new exploratory and water extraction wells by the end of 2028, marks the largest water procurement venture in recent years. With its eyes set on a carbon-neutral future, Orkuveitan is taking a crucial step forward in ensuring the sustainability of the nation’s geothermal resources.

The primary goal of this extensive drilling project is twofold: to secure long-term water supply for the nation’s heating needs and to explore new geothermal fields that hold potential for future development. The company’s approach to this project reflects a commitment to environmental stewardship, utilizing electric drilling rigs to minimize carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly practices. By integrating multiple drilling operations into a single, comprehensive project, Orkuveitan is not only enhancing predictability but also creating new opportunities for cost efficiency—a strategy that sets a strong foundation for contractors to invest in electric drilling technology and stimulates market interest.

Strategic Drilling Categories to Meet Varied Needs

The tender is divided into three categories based on the lifting capacity of the drilling rigs, ensuring that each type of drilling operation is equipped with the most suitable technology:

1. 25-ton Lifting Capacity:These wells are primarily exploratory, aimed at investigating new areas with the potential to expand into water extraction wells.

2.60-ton Lifting Capacity: Focused on exploratory drilling in the Hengill area, these wells also serve as water extraction sites.

3. 100-ton Lifting Capacity: This category includes directional drilling for water extraction, vital for bolstering the country’s hot water reserves.

The project is led by Simon Thorleifsson, with the tender process managed in collaboration with KPMG, taking place across the European Economic Area (EEA). Interested parties have until September 20, 2024, to submit their bids, making this one of the most anticipated energy projects in the region.

Leadership Insights: A Commitment to Renewable Energy

Orkuveitan’s leadership has expressed strong support for this project, emphasizing its significance for Iceland’s energy future. CEO Sævar Freyr Þráinsson highlighted the strategic importance of increasing renewable energy production to achieve the nation’s carbon neutrality goals. “This tender is a testament to our commitment to significantly increasing energy supply in the coming years, supporting growing communities, households, and industries,” he stated.

Sólrún Kristjánsdóttir, Managing Director of Veitur, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of foresight and sustainability in the company’s operations. “This tender aligns perfectly with our strategy of pioneering sustainable solutions, ensuring societal progress. Through innovation and collaboration, we are providing the quality of life for the future.”

The Bigger Picture: A National Effort Toward Sustainability

Orku náttúrunnar’s Managing Director, Árni Hrannar Haraldsson, underscored the broader impact of the project on the nation’s energy landscape. With the ever-increasing demand for electricity, driven by the ongoing energy transition and population growth, the need to ramp up electricity production is more urgent than ever. The tender will be crucial in enhancing energy production while maintaining responsible and environmentally friendly practices.

The project also reflects Orkuveitan’s commitment to the sustainable use of geothermal resources, a sentiment passionately expressed by Hera Grímsdóttir, the company’s Director of Research and Innovation. “Geothermal energy is a limited resource, and it is our responsibility to manage it carefully so that future generations can enjoy the same quality of life. Exploratory drilling is essential to understanding the resource, and without it, we cannot confirm its existence or quantify it.”

Ingvi Gunnarsson, Head of Resource Management at Orkuveitan, emphasized the importance of responsible resource management. “Only by utilizing our resources sustainably can we ensure their longevity and availability for future generations. The upcoming drilling activities aim to explore new geothermal fields, drill new production wells in areas already in use, and renew wells that have served us for decades.”

Geothermal Energy is still at its pioneering Stages and very many tenders are already out With some here

A Step Toward Energy Independence

This ambitious geothermal drilling project by Orkuveitan represents a significant milestone in Iceland’s journey toward energy independence and sustainability. By investing in new geothermal fields and ensuring the longevity of existing resources, Orkuveitan is not only securing the nation’s energy future but also setting a benchmark for environmental stewardship in the energy sector. As Iceland continues to lead the world in renewable energy, this project will play a crucial role in maintaining the country’s position as a global leader in sustainable energy practices.

Driving the UK Toward Net Zero: Chris Sladen on Geothermal’s Untapped Potential

Alphaxioms, we talked to Chris Sladen about his involvement in geothermal both in the UK, and globally By:  Robert Buluma Chris, please begin by explaining a little about yourself, and why you have a passion for geothermal? I have spent over 45 years involved in energy. Following undergraduate studies in geology at Southampton University, and a PhD in sedimentology at Reading University, I joined the energy sector in Aberdeen in 1980. It was a fascinating era when it seemed like at least one giant oil & gas field was discovered offshore every month; the wealth creation for the UK was gigantic. I got to see so much geology and rocks - my true passion. I moved to China in late 1983; not today’s China, this was over 40 years ago, a country closed for decades and embarking on an open-door policy, in part to bring both investment and technology. I became very interested in energy trends, energy politics, and new geography created by changing politics leading to opportunities for ene...

Pertamina Geothermal & Toyota: A New Chapter for Green Hydrogen in Indonesia

Jakarta, September 2025   In a move that could change how Indonesia leverages its enormous geothermal endowment, PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk  (PGE) and PT  Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) signed a joint declaration to develop a green hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia.  By:  Robert Buluma The announcement  made at the 11th Indonesia International Geothermal Convention & Exhibition (IIGCE) in Jakarta  signals an ambition to turn geothermal heat into a strategic feedstock for low-carbon fuels and industrial feedstocks, not just electricity. Why this matters Indonesia sits on some of the world’s richest geothermal resources. Traditionally those resources have been used to generate baseload electricity; PGE’s partnership with Toyota broadens the conversation: use geothermal power and heat to produce green hydrogen, then convert that hydrogen into transport fuels, ammonia, methanol, or industrial hydrogen for heavy industry. That pivot...
