Breaking Ground, Breaking Limits: New Zealand’s Supercritical Geothermal Ambitions Take Shape

Published: 28 May 2025

In the heart of the Taupō Volcanic Zone, where the earth roars with ancient fire, a bold new frontier in energy is stirring beneath New Zealand’s feet.

The Government has announced major strides in its ambitious pursuit of supercritical geothermal energy—a potential game-changer that could propel Aotearoa to the forefront of global clean energy innovation.

And it’s not just ambition—it’s action.

🔥 Supercritical: The Next Leap in Geothermal

Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Dr Shane Reti unveiled fresh details about the government’s progress toward harnessing supercritical geothermal energy. This isn't your everyday clean energy initiative—it's the geothermal equivalent of striking gold at the Earth's molten edge.

Conventional geothermal energy taps into hot water and steam from wells drilled up to 3.5 km deep. But supercritical geothermal? It goes deeper—up to 6 km—where temperatures and pressures soar to levels that transform water into a supercritical fluid. The payoff? An energy yield up to three times greater than conventional geothermal. In essence, fewer wells, more power.

As Minister Jones puts it:

> “It will be a big challenge, but the potential if we can do it will be globally ground-breaking.”

And they’re not just dreaming. They’re investing—$60 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund is now committed to exploring this frontier.

🛠️ Laying the Groundwork for Drilling History

A key part of this phase involves identifying where to sink the first exploratory deep well. Early indications are promising, with efforts zeroing in on the Taupō Volcanic Zone—a geothermal hotbed ripe for discovery. Final decisions on the drilling site are expected by the end of this year, with drilling set to begin in about twelve months.

$5 million of the allocated budget has been drawn to develop the detailed design and cost blueprint for this pioneering well.

But there’s more to this than just funding. This is an all-of-nation push.

Dr Reti issued a powerful challenge to the nation’s brightest minds:

> “I’m issuing a challenge to the New Zealand science and research community – academics, scientists and industry – help us find the solution.”

The call is out. The race is on.

🧠 Who’s Steering the Supercritical Ship?

Leading this historic initiative is a newly formed Supercritical Geothermal Governance Group, comprised of powerhouses in science, governance, and industry:

Hon Tim Groser (Chairperson) – Trade maestro, former US Ambassador, and climate change policy expert.

Dr Charlotte Severne (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāi Tūhoe) – Māori Trustee and geology PhD with deep roots in energy and primary sectors.

Keith Turner – Veteran of the electricity sector and former Transpower Chair.

Jason Hollingworth – CFO of Vector, with decades of high-level finance experience.

Their collective task? Provide oversight, advice, and ensure successful project execution under the direction of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and GNS Science.

🌋 Why This Matters – and Why Now

New Zealand’s clean energy future hinges on resilience and reliability. Unlike hydro, solar, or wind, geothermal isn’t hostage to weather patterns. It’s constant. And supercritical geothermal promises to turn that constancy into unprecedented power.

This is not only about energy—it’s about energy security. In an era of global volatility, tapping into this source could insulate New Zealand from shocks and shortages while slashing emissions.

And let’s be honest—it’s about leadership. If successful, New Zealand won’t just be producing power. It will be leading the world in geothermal innovation.

📅 What’s Next?

Minister Jones is set to unveil a dedicated Geothermal Strategy for New Zealand this July during Geothermal Week in Taupō—an event that could mark the beginning of a geothermal revolution.

The magma is stirring. The countdown has begun. The world is watching.

The Billion-Dollar Gamble Beneath Our Feet: Why Geothermal Exploration Is the Industry’s Greatest Risk

Exploration Risk: The Billion-Dollar Gamble Beneath Our Feet By:  Robert Buluma Image credit: Kane Watikson on LinkedIn  Geothermal energy is often described as the sleeping giant of the clean energy transition  constant, weather-independent, capable of delivering 24/7 baseload power without the intermittency that defines solar and wind. Yet despite this extraordinary promise, geothermal remains underdeveloped in most parts of the world. The reason is not lack of heat. It is not lack of demand. It is not even lack of technology and not even  FINANCE ,  Whilst many will throw that policy card, but Alphaxioms is already future proofing that .  The real barrier lies several kilometers beneath our feet  in uncertainty. Exploration risk is the defining challenge of geothermal energy. Unlike wind turbines that can measure wind speeds before construction, or solar farms that can predict output from sunlight data, geothermal developers must make multimillion-d...

7,000 Feet Deep, 338°F: The Game-Changing Sensor Revolutionizing Enhanced Geothermal Systems

Breakthrough in Geothermal Monitoring: Berkeley Lab's High-Temperature Seismometer Powers the Future of Enhanced Geothermal Systems By: Robert Buluma Image: Cape Station, Fervo Owned Geothermal Station  Geothermal energy has long been valued as a reliable, clean, and renewable source of power. It draws heat from deep within the Earth to generate electricity with virtually no greenhouse gas emissions during operation. Traditional geothermal plants rely on naturally occurring hot water or steam reservoirs, which restricts development to specific volcanic or tectonically active regions. Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), however, represent a game-changing evolution. EGS engineers artificial reservoirs in hot, otherwise impermeable rock formations found almost anywhere with sufficient subsurface heat. By injecting fluid under pressure to create and propagate fractures, EGS dramatically expands the geographic reach and scalability of geothermal power, offering the potential for 24/7, c...
