Eavor Gets Financial Backing From EU and EIB For Bavarian, Geretsried Geothermal Heating Projects

Revolutionizing Energy in Bavaria: The Innovative Geothermal Project Supported by the European Investment Bank

By:Robert Buluma

In the heart of Bavaria, Germany, a groundbreaking energy initiative is taking shape, promising a greener, more sustainable future for the region. Backed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and bolstered by the EU Innovation Fund, this project aims to harness the Earth's natural heat to power homes and businesses, marking a significant leap forward in renewable energy technology.

The Vision: Eavor-LoopTM Technology

At the forefront of this venture lies Eavor , a pioneering energy company dedicated to revolutionizing the way we harness geothermal energy. Their innovative Eavor-LoopTM technology represents a paradigm shift in geothermal power generation. Unlike traditional methods that rely on capturing heat from subsurface water or steam reservoirs, Eavor-LoopTM drills deep into the Earth, directly harvesting heat from underground rocks.

The Implementation: A Giant Underground Radiator

The Eavor-LoopTM system resembles a colossal underground radiator. Vertical wells, drilled to depths of 4,500 to 5,000 meters, are complemented by horizontal laterals spanning over 90 kilometers. This intricate network creates a closed-loop system where a benign working fluid circulates, absorbing heat from the Earth's natural geothermal gradient via conduction. The result? A continuous, renewable energy source with minimal environmental impact.

The Investment: A Sustainable Future

The EIB's investment of close to €45 million, coupled with a €91.6 million grant from the EU Innovation Fund, underscores the commitment to sustainable development and climate action. This financial support paves the way for the construction of the first commercial-scale Eavor-LoopTM project in Bavaria, providing low-carbon heating for the town of Geretsried and beyond. As we reported earlier

The Impact: A Greener Tomorrow

Beyond Bavaria, the implications of this project are profound. By harnessing the Earth's natural heat in a scalable, efficient manner, Eavor-LoopTM has the potential to transform energy landscapes worldwide. From reducing greenhouse gas emissions to enhancing energy security, the benefits extend far beyond local communities.

 A Step Towards Sustainability

As the world grapples with the urgent need for renewable energy solutions, initiatives like the Eavor-LoopTM project offer a beacon of hope. Supported by visionary institutions like the European Investment Bank and driven by innovative companies like Eavor, the transition to a sustainable energy future is within reach. In Bavaria and beyond, the journey towards a greener tomorrow begins underground, where the Earth's heat holds the key to a brighter, more sustainable future.

Geothermal Milestone Reached: Banska PGP-4 Well in Szaflary, Poland Hits 5-Kilometer Depth By : Robert Buluma In a significant development for geothermal energy enthusiasts, drilling operations at the Banska PGP-4 well in Szaflary, Poland have reached a depth of 5 kilometers, marking a major milestone in the project's progress towards its 7-kilometer target. Since its inception, the ambitious geothermal drilling project in Szaflary has been making steady strides. As of the end of 2023, the well has successfully reached a depth of 5000 meters, uncovering promising results along the way. Notably, the well has tapped into a sizable reservoir boasting temperatures of 120 °C. The drilling will persist until it reaches the targeted depth of 7000 meters, where another aquifer is anticipated. The entire drilling endeavor is slated for completion within the first quarter of 2024. Initiated in 2019, the plans to drill a 7-kilometer geothermal well in Podhale, Szaflary aimed at gathering cruc
