Utah FORGE Makes Geothermal History: Successfully Completes Stimulation and Circulation Tests

By: Robert Buluma

Unlocking the Earth's Geothermal Energy Potential

In a groundbreaking achievement for the geothermal energy industry, the Utah Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) at the University of Utah has achieved a major milestone. Through meticulous planning, cutting-edge technology, and a collaborative effort, Utah FORGE has successfully stimulated and circulated two wells, marking a pivotal moment in the quest for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS).

A Triumph of Collaboration and Innovation

The culmination of over two years of planning and analysis, the stimulation and circulation tests represent a triumph of scientific collaboration and innovation. Led by Professor John McLennan and a team of dedicated experts from industry and academia, Utah FORGE achieved outstanding results, setting a new standard for EGS research.

Establishing Connectivity: A Breakthrough for Geothermal Energy

The successful stimulation of wells 16A(78)-32 and 16B(78)-32, located in hot dry granite, is a significant breakthrough for the industry. Through hydraulic fracturing and state-of-the-art seismic monitoring, Utah FORGE established enhanced connectivity between the two wells, laying the groundwork for effective energy transfer from the EGS reservoir.

Minimal Seismicity, Maximum Impact

One of the most remarkable aspects of this achievement is the minimal induced seismicity, with no events surpassing magnitude 1.9. This not only highlights the precision and effectiveness of the stimulation process but also underscores the commitment to safety and sustainability in geothermal energy development.

Towards a Clean Energy Future

The implications of Utah FORGE's success extend far beyond the boundaries of the project site. Jeff Marootian, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, emphasizes the importance of tapping into the Earth's natural heat to expand access to clean, secure, and resilient energy sources for all.

Looking Ahead: Unleashing the Potential of EGS

As Utah FORGE continues to analyze the rich dataset from these tests, plans for additional fieldwork, including a 30-day circulation test, are already underway. Each milestone brings us closer to realizing the full potential of Enhanced Geothermal Systems and their pivotal role in the global energy portfolio.

Pertamina Geothermal Energy, GDC, and AGIL Agree to Accelerate Development of 2 Geothermal Fields in Kenya By: Robert Buluma Nairobi, Kenya, March 8, 2024 – PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) has reached an agreement with Kenya's geothermal development companies, Geothermal Development Company Ltd. (GDC), and Africa Geothermal International Ltd. (AGIL), to expedite the development of geothermal fields in the African nation. Exploration of two geothermal fields in Kenya, developed by PGE along with its partners, is expected to commence in 2024. In high-level discussions held at GDC's headquarters in Nairobi on Wednesday (3/6/2024), PGE and GDC discussed the support from the Kenyan government in accelerating the geothermal field development project in Suswa, a volcanic area located in Narok, Kenya. GDC is a government-owned geothermal developer in Kenya. The PGE delegation, led by President Director Julfi Hadi and accompanied by PGE's Director of Exploration and Develop

Polands Geothermal Wells hits 5km depth Eyeing a 7Km Threshold

Geothermal Milestone Reached: Banska PGP-4 Well in Szaflary, Poland Hits 5-Kilometer Depth By : Robert Buluma In a significant development for geothermal energy enthusiasts, drilling operations at the Banska PGP-4 well in Szaflary, Poland have reached a depth of 5 kilometers, marking a major milestone in the project's progress towards its 7-kilometer target. Since its inception, the ambitious geothermal drilling project in Szaflary has been making steady strides. As of the end of 2023, the well has successfully reached a depth of 5000 meters, uncovering promising results along the way. Notably, the well has tapped into a sizable reservoir boasting temperatures of 120 °C. The drilling will persist until it reaches the targeted depth of 7000 meters, where another aquifer is anticipated. The entire drilling endeavor is slated for completion within the first quarter of 2024. Initiated in 2019, the plans to drill a 7-kilometer geothermal well in Podhale, Szaflary aimed at gathering cruc
