UK FIRST GEOTHERMAL NATIONAL CENTER COMES TO LIFE

UK’s First National Centre Launched to Advance Geothermal Energy

By:Robert Buluma

The dawn of a new era in renewable energy is upon us as the UK proudly introduces its first National Geothermal Center (NGC). Launched with the ambitious goal of harnessing the earth's natural heat to decarbonize the future energy mix, this pioneering initiative marks a significant leap forward in the nation’s journey toward sustainable energy.

A Collaborative Effort

Backed by substantial funding from Durham University , the Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC), SHIFT Geothermal, and The Reece Foundation, the NGC aims to be the driving force behind the UK’s geothermal sector. This collaborative effort seeks to stimulate and support groundbreaking research and innovation, while also shaping a robust policy, regulation, and investment framework to accelerate geothermal advancements.

The Sleeping Giant Awakens

Geothermal energy, often referred to as the "sleeping giant" of the renewable energy sector, holds immense potential. According to Gus Grand, Chief Executive at Eden Geothermal , Cornwall’s deep geothermal sites at the Eden Project and United Downs have already set the stage. “We now welcome the new UK National Geothermal Center as an industry voice to champion the development of the geothermal sector across the UK,” he asserts.

 A Vision for the Future

The NGC envisions a future where geothermal energy plays a crucial role in the UK’s energy landscape. By 2050, the geothermal sector could meet 10GW of the projected heating demand and 1.5GW of the anticipated electricity demand, potentially creating 50,000 jobs and reducing CO₂ emissions by 10 million tonnes annually.

Anne Murrell, Director at the NGC, highlights the significance of this vision: “Geothermal energy is the foundation of energy security in the UK. It is an inexhaustible source of clean heat and power beneath our feet. The new UK National Geothermal Center will work to unearth geothermal energy.”

 Driving Innovation and Collaboration

The NGC is not just a research hub but a collaborative platform, bringing together government, industry, and academia. Its goal is to integrate geothermal energy into the UK’s renewable energy mix, offering a low-carbon option for heating homes, industries, and power generation.

Nigel Lees, Chair of the NGC, emphasizes the importance of this collaborative approach: “The Centre will embrace and build on existing knowledge, working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure a common understanding of the opportunities and challenges. It will provide a consistent voice and advocacy to fully unlock the geothermal potential in the UK.”

Call to Action

The NGC is actively seeking engagement from various sectors to accelerate the uptake of geothermal projects across the UK. This call to action is a clarion call for all stakeholders to join forces in realizing the full potential of geothermal energy, thereby contributing significantly to the UK’s net zero ambitions.

Pertamina Geothermal Energy, GDC, and AGIL Agree to Accelerate Development of 2 Geothermal Fields in Kenya By: Robert Buluma Nairobi, Kenya, March 8, 2024 – PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) has reached an agreement with Kenya's geothermal development companies, Geothermal Development Company Ltd. (GDC), and Africa Geothermal International Ltd. (AGIL), to expedite the development of geothermal fields in the African nation. Exploration of two geothermal fields in Kenya, developed by PGE along with its partners, is expected to commence in 2024. In high-level discussions held at GDC's headquarters in Nairobi on Wednesday (3/6/2024), PGE and GDC discussed the support from the Kenyan government in accelerating the geothermal field development project in Suswa, a volcanic area located in Narok, Kenya. GDC is a government-owned geothermal developer in Kenya. The PGE delegation, led by President Director Julfi Hadi and accompanied by PGE's Director of Exploration and Develop

Polands Geothermal Wells hits 5km depth Eyeing a 7Km Threshold

Geothermal Milestone Reached: Banska PGP-4 Well in Szaflary, Poland Hits 5-Kilometer Depth By : Robert Buluma In a significant development for geothermal energy enthusiasts, drilling operations at the Banska PGP-4 well in Szaflary, Poland have reached a depth of 5 kilometers, marking a major milestone in the project's progress towards its 7-kilometer target. Since its inception, the ambitious geothermal drilling project in Szaflary has been making steady strides. As of the end of 2023, the well has successfully reached a depth of 5000 meters, uncovering promising results along the way. Notably, the well has tapped into a sizable reservoir boasting temperatures of 120 °C. The drilling will persist until it reaches the targeted depth of 7000 meters, where another aquifer is anticipated. The entire drilling endeavor is slated for completion within the first quarter of 2024. Initiated in 2019, the plans to drill a 7-kilometer geothermal well in Podhale, Szaflary aimed at gathering cruc
