The Darajat Geothermal power plant by Mitsubishi

In a move to strengthen Indonesia's renewable energy sector, Mitsubishi Power, the renowned power solutions division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has announced a major upgrade project for the Darajat Geothermal Power Plant, located in Garut, West Java. This ambitious retrofitting initiative, expected to wrap up in autumn 2026, is set to enhance the plant’s output and improve its operational reliability, propelling Indonesia closer to its sustainability goals.

A Game-Changer in Sustainable Energy

The Darajat Geothermal Power Plant, operated by Star Energy Geothermal Darajat II (SEG), has been a cornerstone of Indonesia's renewable energy infrastructure. Now, with the planned retrofit of Unit 3, Mitsubishi Power aims to increase the plant's power output from 121 megawatts (MW) to 129 MW, providing cleaner and more efficient energy to the region. This increase might seem modest, but it represents a significant boost in a sector where every megawatt counts, especially given the global push for decarbonization and Indonesia's ambitious 2060 carbon neutrality target.

Unleashing Advanced Steam Turbine Technology

At the heart of this retrofit lies Mitsubishi Power’s advanced steam turbine technology, renowned for its efficiency and reliability. MHI’s Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works will design and manufacture the upgraded components, ensuring the plant operates at peak performance for years to come. PT. Mitsubishi Power Indonesia will provide long-term support on-site, reinforcing the plant's capacity to deliver consistent electricity to millions while significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Indonesia’s Geothermal Future

As the world’s second-largest geothermal energy producer, Indonesia has a unique opportunity to lead in renewable energy. According to PT. Mitsubishi Power Indonesia President Kazuhiro Yoshida, the country already benefits from six Mitsubishi Power units, collectively delivering approximately 400 MW. This retrofit, therefore, isn’t just an upgrade; it’s part of a broader strategy to help Indonesia tap into its geothermal potential, which remains one of the most sustainable sources of energy available.

With the ongoing support from Mitsubishi Power, Indonesia’s geothermal sector could see transformative growth. This project also marks Mitsubishi Power's continued commitment to providing cutting-edge technology that aligns with global and local environmental priorities.

Beyond the Retrofit: A Vision for Decarbonization

This project symbolizes more than a technological upgrade; it’s Mitsubishi Power’s commitment to a shared vision of a decarbonized future. Through partnerships like these, Mitsubishi Power aims to promote high-performance technology across the global energy landscape. SEG, a vital part of the PT Barito Renewables Energy Tbk (BREN) Group, Indonesia’s leading renewable energy company, is well-positioned to advance Indonesia’s geothermal capacity and help the nation meet its long-term energy needs sustainably.

With projects like the Darajat retrofit, Indonesia’s geothermal potential is poised for a new era, setting an example for the region and the world. As Mitsubishi Power and SEG continue to innovate, Indonesia’s pathway to clean energy shines brighter than ever.

Geothermal Milestone Reached: Banska PGP-4 Well in Szaflary, Poland Hits 5-Kilometer Depth By : Robert Buluma In a significant development for geothermal energy enthusiasts, drilling operations at the Banska PGP-4 well in Szaflary, Poland have reached a depth of 5 kilometers, marking a major milestone in the project's progress towards its 7-kilometer target. Since its inception, the ambitious geothermal drilling project in Szaflary has been making steady strides. As of the end of 2023, the well has successfully reached a depth of 5000 meters, uncovering promising results along the way. Notably, the well has tapped into a sizable reservoir boasting temperatures of 120 °C. The drilling will persist until it reaches the targeted depth of 7000 meters, where another aquifer is anticipated. The entire drilling endeavor is slated for completion within the first quarter of 2024. Initiated in 2019, the plans to drill a 7-kilometer geothermal well in Podhale, Szaflary aimed at gathering cruc
