Medco Power Kicks Off Geothermal Drilling in Bonjol, Targeting 60 MW Clean Energy
By: Robert Buluma
Pasaman, West Sumatra – Indonesia’s transition to clean energy has reached another milestone as PT Medco Power Indonesia, through its subsidiary PT Medco Geothermal Sumatra, officially began drilling its first geothermal exploration well in Bonjol, Pasaman Regency.
The inaugural well, BNJ-1, was spudded on 11 September 2025 in a ceremony attended by the Governor of West Sumatra, Mahyeldi Ansharullah, Medco Power President Director Eka Satria, local government leaders, traditional community representatives, and local stakeholders.
A Step Toward 60 MW of Renewable Power
This drilling marks the first of two planned wells, with a total estimated potential of 60 MW of clean electricity. The project, categorized as part of Indonesia’s National Strategic Projects under the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL 2025–2034), is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Governor Mahyeldi emphasized the importance of this development for the province:
“The inauguration of the BNJ-1 well reinforces West Sumatra’s commitment as a green province, with renewable energy contributing 30.9 percent to our power mix. We hope this project will not only provide clean power but also deliver broad benefits for local communities.”
Safety, Sustainability, and Local Wisdom
Medco Power’s President Director, Eka Satria, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship and community engagement:
“This drilling program prioritizes safety, environmental preservation, and respect for local wisdom. We believe the Bonjol project will deliver clean energy while improving the livelihoods of people in West Sumatra.”
Medco Power’s Expanding Renewable Portfolio
Founded in 2004, Medco Power is part of MedcoEnergi Group and currently operates more than 3.1 GW of installed capacity across 15 locations in Indonesia. In addition to Bonjol, the company is advancing several other renewable projects, including the Blawan Ijen geothermal plant in East Java and solar power projects in East and West Bali.
Meanwhile, parent company Medco Energi (IDX: MEDC) continues to strengthen its three business pillars: oil & gas, clean power, and copper mining, with significant stakes in Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara, one of Indonesia’s largest copper and gold mines.
Driving the Energy Transition
The Bonjol geothermal project demonstrates Medco Power’s role in supporting Indonesia’s national energy transition strategy. With rising demand for sustainable electricity, projects like this pave the way toward achieving Indonesia’s renewable energy targets while creating new opportunities for local economies.
As the drilling progresses, all eyes are on Bonjol to see how this initiative can set a benchmark for future geothermal developments across the country.
