A Historic Milestone for Błonie: The Symbolic Launch of Geothermal Well Błonie GT-1
December 9, 2025
Błonie, Poland
On December 3, 2025, the town of Błonie (just 30 km west of Warsaw) celebrated a moment many of us have been waiting for: the official, symbolic start of drilling the geothermal well Błonie GT-1.
The drilling rig has actually been working non-stop for several weeks already. By the day of the ceremony, the borehole had reached a depth of 1,169 metres, and just 24 hours later it passed 1,214 metres. Yet the town wanted to mark this occasion properly , with speeches, guests of honour, and hundreds of curious residents gathered around the towering rig.
The ribbon was cut together by Mayor Zenon Reszka and Marek Balcer, President of Geotermia Mazowiecka S.A. Both stressed that this project could become a turning point for the energy future of our 13,000-strong community.
Among the guests were some of the most important figures in Polish geology and green energy:
Krzysztof Galos , Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment & Chief Geologist of Poland
Kinga Gajewska ,Member of Parliament
Dr. Eng. Bogusław Bielec ,one of the project’s lead designers
Romuald Reszka – Starost of Warsaw West County
Tomasz Wiśniewski – Chairman of the Błonie Town Council and many local councillors
Representatives of the Marshal’s Office of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship
But the real stars of the day were the residents of Błonie themselves. Families, schoolchildren, and pensioners came to see the massive drilling equipment up close and ask the engineers dozens of questions.
The best part? It costs the town nothing.
The entire investment – almost **13 million PLN** (~3 million EUR) – is fully funded by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management under the programme “Providing access to geothermal waters in Poland”.
Not a single zloty from the municipal budget. That’s the kind of news every mayor loves to share.
Right now, the crew is in the third drilling phase (8½-inch diameter) through Upper Cretaceous layers. If the geological forecasts prove correct (and early data look very encouraging), Błonie will soon have its own source of hot geothermal water that can heat homes, schools, sports halls, and maybe even power a future spa or geothermal greenhouse.
Why this is a big deal
This isn’t just another infrastructure project. It’s the beginning of real energy independence for our town. Cleaner air, lower and more predictable heating costs, new jobs, and a strong signal to investors: Błonie is thinking long-term and thinking green.
For decades we’ve known that the Mazovian basin sits on huge geothermal resources. Now we’re finally tapping into them – literally.
The rig will keep drilling 24/7 through the winter. By spring 2026 we might already be celebrating the first flow of hot water from beneath our feet.
Błonie is going geothermal, and the future suddenly feels a lot warmer.
