PhD Research Opportunities in Economic Geology & Critical Metal Systems – Khalifa University (Fully-Funded Positions, Application Deadline: 2 March 2026)
Exciting Fully-Funded PhD Opportunities in Geosciences at Khalifa University (UAE) – Deadline March 2026
By: Robert Buluma
If you’re a geoscience enthusiast dreaming of pushing the boundaries of Earth science while being fully funded in one of the most dynamic research environments in the Middle East, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
Prof. Hamed Gamaleldien and his research group at Khalifa University of Science and Technology (Abu Dhabi, UAE) have just announced four fully-funded PhD positions at the intersection of geology, geochemistry, tectonics, and critical metal exploration.
Why Khalifa University?
Located in Abu Dhabi, one of the safest and most cosmopolitan cities in the world
State-of-the-art analytical facilities (LA-ICP-MS, electron microprobe, clean labs, etc.)
Strong international collaborations and fieldwork opportunities in the Arabian Shield, East African Orogen, and beyond
Generous tax-free stipend, accommodation support, health insurance, and annual flight ticket
English is the working language
The Four Available PhD Projects
1. The Mantle Gold Cycle in the Semail Ophiolite (UAE): Mineralogical, Geochemical, and Isotopic Investigations
A groundbreaking project exploring how gold is cycled through the mantle and concentrated in ophiolitic rocks – with direct implications for orogenic and ophiolite-hosted gold deposits.
2. HydroCarb: Fingerprinting Ni-Cu-PGE Mineralization in Hydrated-Carbonated Ultramafics
Focused on understanding the role of CO₂-H₂O-rich fluids in the formation of magmatic nickel-copper-PGE deposits – a hot topic for the green energy transition.
3. Linking Ophiolitic Mélange and Subduction Zones with Critical Metal Deposits
Investigating how subduction-related processes concentrate critical metals (Li, Co, REE, etc.) in ophiolitic terranes – highly relevant for the global critical raw materials challenge.
4. Isotopic Constraints on the Formation, Nature, and Geodynamics of Archean Crustal Evolution
Using cutting-edge isotope geochemistry (Hf-Nd-O-S) to unravel the early history of continental crust formation – a classic big-picture question in Precambrian geology.
Who Should Apply?
MSc (or equivalent) in geology, geochemistry, economic geology, or related fields
Strong background or interest in field geology, petrology, and/or isotope geochemistry
Enthusiasm for combining fieldwork (often in stunning desert and mountain settings) with advanced analytical work
Good academic record and English proficiency
Application Deadline: 2 March 2026

Clearly indicate which project(s) you are interested in in the email subject line (e.g., “PhD Application – Project 1: Mantle Gold Cycle”).
Final Thoughts
These projects sit right at the sweet spot between fundamental Earth science questions and societally critical topics (gold, battery metals, rare earth elements). The combination of world-class supervision, excellent funding, and the chance to work on some of the planet’s most spectacular ophiolites and Precambrian terranes makes this an incredibly attractive opportunity.
If you’ve ever wanted to do a PhD that combines hardcore field geology with cutting-edge geochemical tools in a supportive and well-resourced environment, this could be your shot.
Spread the word to anyone who might be interested – opportunities like this don’t come around every day!
