Baker Hughes Partners with Fervo Energy to Deliver Next-Gen Geothermal Power in Utah
By: Robert Buluma
In a bold stride toward a carbon-free energy future, Baker Hughes has been selected by Fervo Energy, a leader in next-generation geothermal, to deliver critical equipment for five cutting-edge Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power plants at Cape Station Phase II in Utah.
The award, announced on September 2, 2025, marks a significant milestone in the evolution of geothermal technology as the project aims to generate 300 MW of reliable, clean, and affordable baseload power enough to power nearly 180,000 homes.
A Game-Changing Collaboration
At the heart of this project is the integration of Baker Hughes’ advanced turboexpanders and BRUSH™ Power Generation generators with Fervo’s groundbreaking Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). Together, they are building a fully integrated geothermal solution that is scalable, repeatable, and ready to redefine baseload power.
Tim Latimer, CEO and co-founder of Fervo Energy, emphasized the importance of this partnership:
“Cape Station was designed to be a flagship development a proof point that geothermal is ready to become a major source of reliable, carbon-free power in the U.S.”
Expanding the Horizon of Clean Power
The collaboration is part of the broader Cape Station development, which includes:
- Phase I – Delivering 100 MW of baseload power by 2026.
- Phase II – Adding 400 MW by 2028.
- Future Capacity – Permitting approval for up to 2 GW of renewable energy.
Lorenzo Simonelli, Chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes, highlighted the global importance of geothermal expansion:
“Geothermal power is proving to be a vital contributor to advancing sustainable energy development. By leveraging our portfolio of technology, we are enabling the scaling of lower-carbon solutions that meet the growing global demand.”
Why This Matters
As the demand for energy driven by data centers, AI growth, and electrification continues to surge, geothermal power is stepping into the spotlight. Unlike intermittent renewables, geothermal delivers consistent baseload energy, making it one of the most promising pathways to a decarbonized grid.
The Baker Hughes–Fervo Energy partnership is not just about powering homes; it’s about proving that geothermal can become a cornerstone of America’s clean energy future.
