Big Blind: The Geothermal Discovery That Changes Everything
Utah startup Zanskar Geothermal quietly dropped one of the most important announcements in American energy in decades.
They discovered and confirmed “Big Blind” ,the first completely blind, commercial-grade geothermal system found in the United States in over thirty years.
Let that sink in.
No hot springs.
No fumaroles.
No steaming ground.
No prior wells.
Zero surface expression whatsoever.
Just desert, sagebrush, and – 7,000 feet below, a reservoir hot enough and permeable enough to support gigawatt-scale power production.
This isn’t incremental progress. This is a paradigm breaker.
Why “Blind” Discoveries Matter So Much
For the last 40 years, geothermal development in the U.S. has been geographically handcuffed. You could only build plants where nature advertised the resource on the surface – think Yellowstone, The Geysers, or Imperial Valley. Everywhere else was considered too risky and too expensive to explore.
That constraint artificially shrank the industry. The official estimates of U.S. geothermal potential have hovered around 30–60 GW for decades… because that’s all we could see from the surface.
Zanskar just proved those estimates are laughably conservative.
Using custom-built AI trained on millions of data points (seismic, gravity, magnetics, well logs, geologic maps, even satellite thermal imagery), they predicted a hidden reservoir with no surface clue, convinced investors to fund the test well, drilled it… and hit paydirt on the first try.
Commercial temperatures. Commercial flow rates. No dry hole.
They’ve now done this three times in the past twelve months.
What This Actually Means
1. The real U.S. geothermal resource is probably 500 GW or more – not 50 GW
2. Large parts of Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Idaho, and eventually Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona just entered the game
3. Baseload, zero-carbon, 24/7/365 power with 90–95% capacity factor is no longer geographically limited
4. Data centers, heavy industry, and utilities desperate for firm clean power suddenly have a new, domestic, inflation-proof option
Zanskar didn’t just find another geothermal field.
They re-opened the American West for geothermal exploration the way 3D seismic re-opened offshore oil in the 1990s.
The Punchline from Zanskar Themselves
“Geothermal discovery is a game the U.S. industry got out of long ago, but it’s a game Zanskar is bringing back with urgency and much greater precision… We’re proving geothermal skeptics wrong with the drill bit—showing the world that conventional geothermal is anything but scarce… if you know where to look.”
They’re not wrong.
Big Blind is the proof-of-concept the entire industry has been waiting for.
The geothermal renaissance isn’t coming.
Thanks to Zanskar, it started yesterday.
