In a groundbreaking move toward clean energy and sustainable tourism, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) has announced that Araku Valley, one of Andhra Pradesh’s most scenic destinations, will host India’s largest Geothermal Energy Technology (GET) pilot project.
This bold initiative marks a new era in India’s pursuit of low-carbon tourism infrastructure, aligning seamlessly with the Union government’s clean-tech development vision.
⚡ Transforming Tourism with Geothermal Innovation
The Araku Valley project will deploy earth air tunnel systems and ground source heat pumps, technologies that harness stable underground temperatures to deliver eco-friendly heating and cooling.
This smart design is expected to reduce energy consumption by over 50%, while cutting greenhouse gas emissions, drastically improving operational efficiency and guest comfort across tourism facilities.
🌱 A Collaboration for the Future
Speaking about the initiative, Ajay Jain, Special Chief Secretary to Tourism, highlighted that Andhra Pradesh remains steadfast in its commitment to world-class clean technologies and sustainable job creation.
“The state aims to generate over 25,000 direct and indirect jobs through tourism projects in the next four years,” said Jain.
He further emphasized that this project builds upon a decade-long partnership between EESL and AP Tourism, which has already seen successful national energy programs like UJALA and SLNP.

The decision to launch the geothermal pilot ahead of the Global CII Summit in Visakhapatnam showcases Andhra Pradesh’s strategic positioning as a leader in sustainable tourism and energy efficiency.
The project is not only expected to serve as a benchmark for eco-tourism in India but also as a replicable model for energy-smart hospitality infrastructure across other states.

With an estimated payback period of just 3–4 years, this initiative presents a compelling financial case for the hospitality industry. Reduced operational costs, combined with enhanced visitor comfort and sustainability credentials, make geothermal adoption an attractive proposition for resort and tourism developers nationwide.
