KenGen Feasibility Studies Tender For Geothermal Energy Production From Brine

Harnessing Geothermal Energy: KenGen's Feasibility Study on Power Generation from Brine in Olkaria, Kenya

In the heart of East Africa lies a geothermal treasure trove: the Olkaria Geothermal Field in Kenya. Here, Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), the state-owned electric power generation company, is embarking on an ambitious project to unlock even more of the region's renewable energy potential. With the announcement of a tender for consultancy services to conduct a feasibility study on power generation from separated geothermal brine, KenGen is taking a significant step towards expanding its geothermal energy capacity.

Understanding the Project

The main objective of this feasibility study is to explore the technical, economic, environmental, and financial viability of harnessing power from brine, a byproduct of geothermal energy production, within the Olkaria Geothermal Field. Currently, over 180 production wells in Olkaria produce a two-phase geothermal fluid consisting of steam and brine. While steam is readily utilized for electricity generation, the separated brine presents an untapped opportunity.

The Potential of Brine

The separated brine, produced at temperatures between 158°C and 188°C and pressures of 6 to 12 bars, holds significant heat energy that can be utilized for additional power generation. KenGen aims to leverage binary technology to extract this energy efficiently. Additionally, the feasibility study will evaluate previously unused wells for their potential to contribute to power generation, considering factors such as pressure, distance to existing plants, and enthalpy.

The Scope of the Study

The consultancy services sought by KenGen require expertise in assessing the physical quality and quantity of the brine, recommending optimal wells for reinjection, and advising on the potential for additional power generation using binary technology. Furthermore, the study will analyze the chemical, technical, and economic constraints and propose viable solutions.

The Importance of Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is a clean, renewable resource that offers a reliable alternative to fossil fuels. Kenya has been a pioneer in geothermal energy development, with the Olkaria Geothermal Field being a testament to the country's commitment to sustainable energy solutions. By expanding its geothermal capacity, Kenya can reduce its reliance on non-renewable energy sources, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.

KenGen's tender for the feasibility study on power generation from brine in Olkaria marks a significant milestone in Kenya's journey towards a sustainable energy future. By harnessing the untapped potential of geothermal brine, the project has the potential to not only increase electricity generation capacity but also drive economic growth and environmental sustainability. As the world seeks cleaner and more efficient energy solutions, initiatives like this serve as shining examples of innovation and progress in the renewable energy sector.
