Revolutionizing Heat Supply: Karlsfeld and MAN Join Forces for Geothermal Energy
In a groundbreaking partnership, the municipality of Karlsfeld and the renowned bus and truck manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus SE are set to embark on a pioneering geothermal energy project. Scheduled to commence in 2025, this initiative aims to tap into the geothermal resources lying beneath Karlsfeld, Bavaria, commonly referred to as the "Bavarian oil."
The concept behind this ambitious endeavor is simple yet transformative: harnessing hot water from depths of up to 2000 meters to provide heating not only for MAN's factory premises and corporate offices but also for segments of the neighboring community of Karlsfeld.
The recent municipal council meeting marked a significant step towards realizing this shared geothermal project. But what prompted MAN to collaborate specifically with Karlsfeld? The answer lies in the municipality's past engagement with geothermal energy. While Karlsfeld explored geothermal options two decades ago, concerns over the high financial risks associated with water exploration drilling led them to opt for their current predominantly wood-fired combined heat and power plant, complemented by a 15-kilometer-long district heating network servicing 30% of Karlsfeld, including major public buildings and schools.
Drawing on this invaluable expertise, Karlsfeld emerges as a potential partner for MAN. "I could envision MAN as a good partner," remarked Mayor Stefan Kolbe during the council session. According to Benedikt Nesselhauf, MAN's Public Affairs & Reputation representative, the company aims to transition its gas-heated workshops and offices, with a heat demand of up to 50 GWh, to sustainable geothermal energy. The mineral rights for Karlsfeld-East are exclusively held by MTU.
Pending all necessary approvals by autumn, drilling could commence in 2025, as indicated by geothermal expert Christian Nolte. Integration of MAN's geothermal supply with Karlsfeld's district heating network could occur as early as summer 2026. While municipal councilors expressed enthusiasm for this potential joint venture, technical specifications and operational models warrant further deliberation, noted Martin Eberle, director of the municipal utilities.
This collaborative effort between Karlsfeld and MAN represents more than just a shift towards renewable energy—it embodies a forward-looking approach to sustainable development and community partnership. As the world seeks greener alternatives to traditional energy sources, initiatives like these serve as beacons of innovation, paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future.
