On September 25, 2024, a monumental step was taken in Indonesia’s renewable energy journey. PT Cahaya Anagata Energy (CAE), a joint venture between PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) and Chevron New Energies Holdings Indonesia Ltd., officially received the long-awaited Geothermal Permit (IPB) for the Way Ratai Geothermal Working Area (WKP) in Lampung. This collaboration promises to set new benchmarks in geothermal exploration and development, marking a pivotal moment for Indonesia’s clean energy ambitions.

A Breakthrough in Energy Bureaucracy

The symbolic handover of the IPB took place at the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) in Central Jakarta, with key energy leaders present. What makes this milestone even more significant is that this was the first geothermal permit processed entirely online through the Online Single Submission (OSS) system. This technological shift signals Indonesia’s commitment to reducing bureaucratic hurdles and paving the way for faster renewable energy projects.

Director General of EBTKE, Eniya Listiani Dewi, emphasized the government’s dedication to renewable energy development during the handover ceremony. “The government fully supports geothermal energy development, and we’ve streamlined processes to ensure green energy exploration proceeds efficiently,” she stated, signaling a new era of regulatory efficiency.

USD 28.85 Million Investment for Exploration

The issuance of this permit is not just about paperwork; it’s a precursor to real action. PT CAE will initiate exploration surveys to identify geothermal sources in WKP Way Ratai. With an investment of USD 28.85 million for the exploration phase, this project signifies a serious commitment from both Chevron and PGE to tap into Indonesia’s vast geothermal potential.

“WKP Way Ratai is part of a grand strategy to strengthen PGE’s geothermal portfolio,” said PGE President Director Julfi Hadi. He underscored the importance of strategic partnerships like this one with Chevron, which aims to contribute to sustainable energy development while benefiting local communities.

The Road Ahead for PT Cahaya Anagata Energy

The journey to geothermal energy production is a rigorous one, and PT CAE’s first task is to conduct exploration surveys. This includes geological, geophysical, and geochemical studies, known as 3G, which will determine the viability of further development. With transparency and community involvement at the heart of this process, PT CAE is poised to ensure that this project not only provides clean energy but also creates lasting benefits for the people of Indonesia.

President Director of PT CAE, Wahyu Budiarto, expressed gratitude to the government for the support, saying, “We are committed to conducting exploration with the highest safety and environmental standards.” He highlighted that stakeholder involvement, particularly from surrounding communities, would be key to the project’s success.

A Strategic Leap for Indonesia’s Clean Energy Future

This collaboration between Chevron and PGE is more than just another energy project; it’s a testament to Indonesia’s growing role in the global energy transition.
