OMV GeoTherm NL BV Takes Over Major Parts of Shell’s Dutch Geothermal Portfolio

OMV GeoTherm NL BV Takes Over Major Segments of Shell Geothermie’s Dutch Geothermal Portfolio

By: Robert Buluma

In a significant development for the Dutch geothermal sector, a new and highly experienced international player has stepped into the arena. OMV Green Energy GmbH—operating in the Netherlands under the name OMV GeoTherm NL BV—has officially taken over a large portion of Shell Geothermie’s geothermal portfolio. This transition marks an important moment for the growth, diversification, and continued professionalization of geothermal energy development in the Netherlands.

With this move, OMV becomes a central actor in several high-potential geothermal projects across Rotterdam, Capelle, and Rijnland, reinforcing its long-term commitment to supporting renewable energy systems across Europe.

A New Powerhouse in Dutch Geothermal Development

OMV, headquartered in Austria, is internationally recognized for its extensive knowledge of subsurface geology, drilling technologies, and project development. The company has been steadily expanding its presence in geothermal energy, strengthening its position as a serious player in the transition toward low-carbon energy systems.

One of OMV’s flagship geothermal involvements is the deeep.at project in Vienna, which has served as a testbed for innovative geothermal exploration and drilling. Building upon such experience, OMV aims to bring technical depth, operational efficiency, and proven methodologies to the Dutch geothermal landscape.

According to the Aardwarmte Rijnland Consortium, bringing OMV into the project marks a major boost:

“With the participation of OMV, we gain a partner who adds technical knowledge and experience highly relevant to the consortium’s work. We look forward to collaborating with OMV in the next phase of the project.”

This endorsement reflects the industry’s confidence in OMV’s capacity to strengthen geothermal development at a time when the sector is experiencing both rising attention and increasing project complexity.

Shell’s Decade of Geothermal Exploration in the Netherlands

To understand the significance of this transition, one must first appreciate the role Shell has played in geothermal energy across the Netherlands. Under the brand Shell Geothermie, the company has been active since the previous decade, leveraging its vast expertise in subsurface engineering, energy production, and large-scale project execution.

Shell’s geothermal work has targeted key strategic areas where geothermal heat could support industries, cities, and greenhouse agriculture. Over the years, Shell and its partners identified promising geothermal zones in:

  • Delft
  • Rotterdam and the wider Rijnmond region
  • Westland greenhouse districts
  • Multiple regions in Friesland

These projects focused on identifying high-potential geothermal reservoirs capable of providing sustainable, reliable heat to district heating systems, businesses, and greenhouse operations. Shell’s contribution helped move geothermal energy from exploratory discussions into practical, field-ready deployment.

Shell Begins Phasing Out of Dutch Geothermal Projects

In February 2025, Shell announced its decision to scale down its involvement in geothermal energy projects within the Netherlands. This strategic shift led to the transfer of responsibilities to project partners who were already involved in the work.

Key transitions included:

  • Leeuwarden (GCL project) – responsibilities transferred to project partners
  • Delft (GTD project) – Shell’s role transferred
  • Westland (ADL project) – handed over to respective partners
  • Rotterdam Haven permit – formally terminated

These adjustments paved the way for Shell to completely exit parts of its geothermal portfolio. What remained was a consolidated package of geothermal projects in Rotterdam, Capelle, and Rijnland, which Shell opted to transfer wholly to OMV Green Energy GmbH.

This full transfer now positions OMV GeoTherm NL BV as the new primary developer and operator of these geothermal ventures.

What This Means for Dutch Geothermal Energy

The Netherlands stands at a decisive point in its renewable energy transition. With a strong focus on reducing natural gas dependence and meeting ambitious climate targets, geothermal energy is increasingly recognized as a vital heat source for households, businesses, and industries.

The entry of OMV into the Dutch geothermal market carries several implications:

1. Increased Technical Expertise

OMV’s strong background in subsurface engineering and safe drilling operations brings a valuable injection of skills to the sector. As geothermal wells reach greater depths and require more advanced drilling techniques, experienced operators like OMV help reduce risk and improve project reliability.

2. Renewed Confidence and Investment Momentum

Large international companies entering the market typically signal long-term confidence. OMV’s participation may encourage:

  • New financing partners
  • Regional operators
  • Municipal heat networks
  • International geothermal innovators

This kind of momentum can catalyze faster geothermal development across the Netherlands.

3. Strengthening Regional Heat Networks

Projects in Rotterdam, Capelle, and Rijnland are strategically positioned near existing and future heat networks. Geothermal heat from these fields can supply thousands of homes and support district heating systems, helping reduce pressure on the electricity grid and decreasing reliance on natural gas.

4. Continuity for Ongoing Geothermal Projects

With Shell stepping back, there was initial uncertainty about the future of several geothermal ventures. OMV’s takeover ensures continuity, preserving years of geological insights, test results, permits, and development plans—avoiding costly restarts or project delays.

Why Geothermal Remains Crucial for the Netherlands

Geothermal energy offers unique advantages that align perfectly with Dutch climate and energy goals:

  • Base-load renewable heat available 24/7
  • Minimal land use, ideal for densely populated regions
  • Compatibility with district heating systems
  • A stable, long-term heat source with decades of output

As Dutch cities commit to phasing out gas and expanding heat networks, geothermal becomes one of the few renewable sources capable of delivering large-scale, reliable heat.

Moreover, studies—such as those commissioned by EBN—show that geothermal integration can relieve pressure on the electricity grid, making it a strategic fit for nationwide energy planning.

A Pivotal Transition for the Future of Dutch Geothermal

The handover of Shell’s geothermal portfolio to OMV GeoTherm NL BV marks more than just a corporate transaction—it symbolizes the continued maturation of geothermal energy in the Netherlands. With fresh expertise arriving from Austria and a renewed commitment to innovation in geothermal heat, the Dutch energy sector steps into a new chapter filled with technical promise and strategic opportunities.

As OMV moves forward with its Dutch projects, stakeholders across the geothermal ecosystem—consortia, municipalities, greenhouse operators, and energy planners—will be watching closely. The success of these projects could shape the future trajectory of geothermal energy nationwide.

One thing is clear: the Netherlands is doubling down on geothermal, and OMV’s arrival is set to accelerate that journey.
