A New Chapter for Geothermal Exploration in NRW: A Major Research Drilling Project



The Geologischer Dienst Nordrhein-Westfalen (GD NRW) has just launched an exciting new phase in its mission to unlock the geothermal potential of the region. On September 9, 2024, the official announcement was made for the launch of a research drilling project, marking a significant milestone in NRW's efforts to tap into sustainable energy resources.

This ambitious project is focused on exploring the geothermal capacity of the "Kohlenkalk" rock layer, with the aim of drilling up to 1,000 meters deep. The insights gained from this project could shape the future of renewable energy in the region and contribute to the ongoing transition towards clean, sustainable power. The seismically driven preliminary investigations have already indicated promising results, adding to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming drilling scheduled for March 2025.

A Multi-Phase Approach to Innovation

The research project is divided into two crucial phases. The first phase covers the drilling work itself, for which GD NRW has opened a public tender. Companies with expertise in geothermal drilling are encouraged to submit their bids electronically by September 17, 2024. This marks the beginning of the hands-on work that could pave the way for future geothermal development across NRW.

The second phase will focus on geophysical investigations, which will be essential for analyzing the results of the drilling. This phase will be tendered separately, allowing for detailed exploration and study of the Kohlenkalk formation's geothermal potential.
