The U.S. Department of Energy just dropped a massive boost for geothermal energy—and it's game-changing for the future of clean, reliable power!
DOE Unleashes $171.5 Million to Supercharge Next-Generation Geothermal in the U.S.
On February 25, 2026, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced a funding opportunity worth up to $171.5 million through its Office of Geothermal. This isn't small change—it's aimed at accelerating next-generation geothermal technologies that could unlock massive potential for affordable, 24/7 baseload energy across America.

Why does this matter? The U.S. already leads globally with about 4 gigawatts of installed geothermal capacity, but DOE studies show we could realistically scale to at least 300 gigawatts by 2050. That's enough to power millions of homes and businesses with clean, domestic energy that doesn't rely on weather or time of day.

This funding directly supports President Trump's Executive Order on Unleashing American Energy, focusing on innovation, cost reduction, and energy dominance. As DOE Assistant Secretary Kyle Haustveit put it:

“Work under this opportunity will directly support our commitments to advance energy addition, reduce energy costs for American families and businesses, and unleash American energy dominance and innovation... these demonstrations and drilling activities will help us realize the enormous potential of geothermal to spur domestic manufacturing, enable data center growth, and provide affordable, reliable, and secure energy solutions nationwide.”

What's Being Funded?
The Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO)
officially DE-FOA-0003472 covers six topic areas in total, but the first round opens just two:

Topic Area 1: Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) field-scale tests → Up to $100 million for real-world testing at depths and temperatures ready for full-scale projects. Expect 4–10 awards focused on R&D, testing, and evaluation of next-gen tech.
Topic Area 6: Drilling for next-generation and hydrothermal resource exploration, characterization, and confirmation → Up to $71.5 million to drill and verify promising sites for power production. Anticipated 8–18 awards.

The other topics (like closed-loop systems and super-hot/supercritical tests) are closed for this initial round but may open later.

These projects will help de-risk geothermal development, attract private investment, and grow the industry nationwide.

Who Can Apply?
Primarily U.S.-based entities (for-profits, nonprofits, universities, state/local governments, Tribes, etc.). Foreign entities can't lead as prime recipients but can participate as sub-recipients (with limits: typically no more than 20% of DOE funding to foreign subs, majority work in the U.S., and often a waiver or specific cost-share rules apply).
