Geothermal Revolution in the Desert: KAEC Teams Up with Strataphy to Slash Energy Use

KAEC and Strataphy Forge a Path to Sustainable Urban Cooling: A Landmark Partnership in Geothermal Innovation

In a significant step forward for sustainable urban development in Saudi Arabia, Emaar, The Economic City (KAEC) has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Strataphy, a leading Saudi deep-tech startup specializing in geothermal cooling solutions. Announced recently, this collaboration aims to explore the large-scale deployment of advanced geothermal cooling technologies across KAEC’s expansive facilities and tenant ecosystem.

The partnership focuses on introducing innovative “Cooling as a Service” models that promise to enhance operational efficiency, dramatically reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions, and support scalable, future-ready infrastructure. This initiative aligns closely with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 sustainability goals and the broader Saudi Green Initiative.

King Abdullah Economic City: The Foundation for Tomorrow’s Urban Model

King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) is one of the most ambitious urban megaprojects in the Middle East. Spanning roughly 185 square kilometers along the Red Sea coast, approximately 100 km north of Jeddah, KAEC was launched in 2005 as a flagship component of Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification strategy.

Managed by Emaar, The Economic City, the project is designed to become a fully integrated, self-sustaining metropolis capable of supporting up to two million residents. It combines residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, industrial zones, educational campuses, healthcare facilities, tourism areas, and world-class logistics infrastructure.

A key highlight is the King Abdullah Port, one of the region’s most advanced and busiest maritime gateways, strategically positioned to connect Asia, Europe, and Africa. The Industrial Valley has rapidly become the fastest-growing manufacturing and logistics hub in the Middle East, bolstered by attractive incentives within its Special Economic Zone.

Sustainability has always been central to KAEC’s vision. The city incorporates green spaces, smart technologies, efficient resource management, and forward-thinking infrastructure planning. In a climate where summer temperatures frequently exceed 40°C, cooling represents one of the largest energy consumers. Reducing the energy demand and environmental impact of cooling systems is therefore a strategic priority for KAEC’s long-term development.

Strataphy: Pioneering Geothermal Cooling in the Middle East

Strataphy, founded in 2025 and headquartered in Khobar, is quickly establishing itself as a leader in sustainable cooling technology. The company offers “Cooling as a Service” (CaaS), a subscription-based model that removes the traditional barriers of high upfront capital costs, allowing clients to adopt high-efficiency geothermal systems with minimal financial risk.

At the heart of Strataphy’s offering is its proprietary PrimeLoop™ technology. This system uses the Earth’s stable subsurface temperatures—consistently cooler than surface air in hot climates—to provide reliable, low-energy cooling for data centers, industrial plants, commercial buildings, hospitals, and even large-scale agricultural facilities. Independent deployments have demonstrated electricity savings of up to 50%, along with substantial reductions in operational costs and carbon emissions.

Strataphy has already built an impressive portfolio of partnerships and pilot projects. These include collaborations with major industrial players, food production companies, and healthcare providers across the Kingdom. The company’s end-to-end service model—covering design, drilling, installation, operation, and maintenance—combined with patent-pending innovations, enables geothermal cooling to be deployed effectively even in challenging geological conditions.

By eliminating the need for water-intensive cooling towers and reducing reliance on conventional electricity-heavy air conditioning, Strataphy’s solutions deliver both economic and environmental advantages in water-scarce, high-temperature regions like Saudi Arabia.

The Strategic MoU: What It Means for KAEC

The KAEC-Strataphy MoU sets the stage for detailed feasibility studies and potential joint venture structures to roll out geothermal cooling systems at scale across the city. The collaboration will evaluate how these technologies can be integrated into existing and future developments, including industrial facilities, commercial buildings, residential complexes, and data center infrastructure.

Early projections suggest that successful implementation could reduce electricity consumption and cooling costs by up to 50% annually in targeted facilities. It could also free up a significant portion of KAEC’s electrical capacity for other high-value uses while cutting CO₂ emissions considerably.

Both parties have expressed strong enthusiasm for the partnership. Leadership from KAEC has highlighted that sustainability and innovation remain core pillars of the city’s development strategy. For Strataphy, the collaboration represents an opportunity to demonstrate the scalability of its technology in one of the region’s most visionary urban projects.

Why Geothermal Cooling Matters in Saudi Arabia’s Context

In the Kingdom, cooling can account for 60–70% of total electricity demand during peak summer months. Traditional air-conditioning systems are energy-intensive, expensive to operate, and contribute heavily to greenhouse gas emissions. Geothermal cooling offers a fundamentally different approach.

By exchanging heat with the stable temperatures found a few dozen meters below ground, geothermal systems provide consistent cooling performance regardless of external air temperature or humidity. Unlike conventional chillers, they use far less electricity, require no water for evaporative cooling, and have a smaller physical footprint.

These characteristics make geothermal cooling especially attractive for energy-intensive sectors such as data centers, manufacturing plants, hospitals, and large residential communities—precisely the types of facilities KAEC is developing.

Alignment with Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative

This partnership directly supports Saudi Arabia’s national transformation agenda. Vision 2030 emphasizes economic diversification, environmental sustainability, quality-of-life improvements, and the creation of a knowledge-based economy. The Saudi Green Initiative, a flagship environmental program, targets ambitious emissions reductions, massive afforestation efforts, and accelerated adoption of clean energy technologies.

Geothermal cooling fits perfectly into this framework. It leverages local geological resources, reduces dependence on imported fuels, creates high-value green jobs, and helps build climate-resilient infrastructure. KAEC, as a key Public Investment Fund-backed project, is well-positioned to serve as a living laboratory for such innovations.

Looking Ahead: A Model for the Region and Beyond

If successful, the KAEC-Strataphy collaboration could become a blueprint for other economic cities, special zones, and major developments across Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC region. As global demand for energy-efficient cooling surges—driven by population growth, urbanization, AI data center expansion, and climate change—this model offers a scalable, replicable path forward.

The partnership also signals the growing maturity of Saudi Arabia’s deep-tech and cleantech ecosystem. Local startups like Strataphy are now capable of delivering world-class solutions tailored to regional needs, positioning the Kingdom as an emerging hub for geothermal and sustainable infrastructure innovation.

Conclusion

The Memorandum of Understanding between KAEC and Strataphy marks more than just another business agreement. It represents a concrete step toward realizing the vision of sustainable, future-ready cities in one of the world’s most challenging climates.

By combining KAEC’s ambitious urban development platform with Strataphy’s cutting-edge geothermal expertise, this partnership has the potential to redefine how cooling is delivered in arid environments—making cities cooler, more efficient, and more environmentally responsible.

As Vision 2030 continues to unfold, initiatives like this will play a critical role in shaping Saudi Arabia’s legacy as a global leader in sustainable urban innovation.
